I believe the new trend of putting health ratings on packages or grocery store shelves is a bad idea. It’s ridiculous to think that a food can be summed up to a one-number score. Healthy means different things to different people. For example, a product that is whole grain would be considered healthy by a lot of people, but what else is in the product? Maybe the product has a lot of salt, so it’s bad for people with high blood pressure. Maybe it has a lot of sugar or honey. It could be deadly to a diabetic. But, it’s still whole grain. Weight loss diets vary; some limit carbs, some sugar, calories or fat. So depending on the diet, different foods are considered healthy or unhealthy.

I have developed food Iabels for a food processing facility owned by a large grocery store chain. I agree the nutritional facts system should be updated. The standard serving sizes of foods, as determined by the FDA Code of Federal Regulations , are too small. The average consumer eats more than a serving in one sitting. Next time you eat potato salad try putting ½ cup on your plate. Do you think that is the amount that a normal person would eat? Take toaster pastries for instance. The serving size is one pastry. There are two in each pouch. Don’t most people eat both of them? When you read the nutritional information label, you must check the serving size and multiply by two. So you have to be careful when you look at the regular nutrition panel, too.

The new nutritional ratings are not even the same in all grocery stores. You have to figure out a different one for each store. With all its faults, at least the current system is consistent on all foods.
